LITURGY OF THE WORD

WITH CHILDREN

SCRIPTURE FOR YOUNG MINDS

Liturgy of the Word with Children is a worship experience tailored for children ages 6 and older and is offered twice a month during Sunday Mass, from September through May.

As baptized members of our community, children have the right to hear the Word of God, but sometimes the vocabulary used in the readings during Mass prevents them from receiving the message.

During Liturgy of the Word with Children, participants hear Scripture readings taken from the Lectionary for Masses with Children which are worded for easier comprehension. The children are also encouraged to share their own understanding of the readings.

After gathering in the church at the start of Mass for the Introductory Rites, the children process to their own “chapel.” The Liturgy of the Word with Children presiders proclaim the Word and help engage the children in a reflection of the day’s readings. After the Prayer of the Faithful, all return to the main assembly to join in celebrating the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Registration is not required. All who wish to participate may make a name tag on their way into Mass and are invited to join the group when the priest calls the children forward.
